Bunions
Bunions At The Movement Centre
Bunions occur when the alignment of the big toe changes, forming a bony bump that protrudes out from the inside edge of the foot. They can be generally painful, unsightly, and problematic when it comes to fitting them in shoes.
What causes them?
Bunions are caused by forces that allow the bones of the front of the foot to move out of place. The tip of the big toe moves towards the smaller toes and the long bone that adjoins this (1st metatarsal) moves out to meet the base of the big toe in a V-shaped joint and is also referred to as Hallux Valgus.
Why are my bunions so big?
There are many factors that may predispose individuals to forming a bunion. These include:
- Genetics
- Loose ligaments
- Footwear (narrow, pointed toe or high heels)
- Medical conditions (eg. Rheumatoid Arthritis)
- Foot injuries
- Foot biomechanics (how the foot functions when you move)
What can I do about my hallux valgus?
One of the best things that you can do for your bunions is find out more about what is predisposing you to them and what might be allowing them to get bigger. The podiatrists at The Movement Centre specialise in prevention. They will assess your foot mechanics, footwear, medical history and investigate anything else they may be causing them to worsen over time. Early identification is key, so then we can implement a treatment program tailored specifically for you. This might include foot or leg strengthening exercises, stretches, orthotic therapy, foot mobilisation therapy, footwear education and in some of the more severe cases, referral to trusted foot surgeons. Call the Movement Centre for more information or Book Online for an assessment of your foot mechanics now and move towards becoming a more comfortable you.
The best project you'll
ever work on is you.
